Manager's leadership in the public sector : A qualitative study on how managers in the public sector describe and experience their leadership (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

This is a qualitative study of how managers in the public sector describe their leadership. The purpose of the study is to investigate how managers in the public sector details their leadership and how they feel that leadership works in relation to the employees and how the managers' views can be understood from a gender perspective. The theoretical framework from which the study is based is about leadership, the managers' relationship with the employees and theories of male and female leadership. The study was conducted through semi-structured interviews with eight managers in government agencies in Västra Götaland. The selection of the study's respondents is based on a targeted selection with an even gender distribution. The conclusions that could be drawn were that the managers' description of their leadership was based on trust, availability and team-based and situational leadership. The managers considered it important to make use of both management and leadership in their daily work. They also felt that the leadership works well in relation to the employees by updating them with feedback and allowing the staff to have a certain influence on decisions regarding the working environment. The description of their leadership between the respondents' female and male managers had, in most cases, similarities that indicate that everyone was aware of their staff.
