Abstract [sv]

Modersmålsundervisningen är den undervisning som elever i grundskolan och gymnasieskolan har rätt till om de har ett annat modersmål än svenska och använder detta som dagligt umgängesspråk. De lokala skolmyndigheterna ansvarar för att organisera modersmålsundervisning, när lämplig lärare finns tillgänglig och när det finns minst fem elever med ett gemensamt modersmål som inte är svenska och som är deras dagliga språk i hemmet. Ett stort problem är dock idag att modersmålsundervisningen oftast organiseras efter ordinarie skoltid och intresset för ämnet modersmål bland flerspråkiga elever och föräldrar sjunker. I den här boken kommer du att ta reda på hur ett antal elever, pedagoger och skolledare reflekterar kring modersmålsundervisning, och hur den upplevs när undervisning genomförs på ordinarie skoltid. I boken redovisas resultaten med utgångspunkt från tre olika områden: attityder, språk och lärande samt uppfattningar om själva integreringsförsök.

This doctoral thesis is a policy study about mother tongue education policies as they have developed historically in Sweden. The overall aim of this thesis is to investigate the policies of mother tongue education from 1957 to 2017, focusing on how Swedish nation-state politics and societal change characterized the status and positioning of mother tongue education in the Swedish school system.
