Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

The University of Borås offers a 2ECTS course in research data management designed specifically for doctoral students. According to feedback, the doctoral students appreciate learning practical skills applicable to their doctoral projects and developing a critical understanding of data management. The course has even attracted the interest of other university researchers.

Data management plans are becoming increasingly ubiquitous, potentially providing a competitive advantage when included in research proposals. Researchers, aware of this, need the university to provide opportunities to acquire the necessary and relevant skills.

To provide a responsive and targeted learning environment, the university library plans to offer four research data management workshops to researchers in the fall of 2023. One workshop will focus on the unique challenges of artistic research in the textile, fashion, and design fields. The other three will focus on the data management plan through the research process, from proposal to work in process to potentially publishing datasets at the end of the project. The university library coordinates the planning and execution of the educational effort, with input from other professional services such as Archive and IT, the Grants and Innovation Office, and the university's Research Ethics Committee.

Focal aspects:

·        Collaborative planning for educational efforts

·        Researchers, including in artistic research, specifically textile and fashion design

Universitetsbibliotekarieprofessionen i förändring : dynamiken att förhandla professionell jurisdiktion
Abstract [en]

This study aims to better understand the dynamics of negotiating professional jurisdiction within research from the perspective of academic librarians who develop library services for researchers. This qualitative case study consists of 24 semi-structured interviews, 32 recorded non-participant observations, and seven official university library documents collected at one Swedish university library with three division libraries during 2016.

The analytical frame is based on Abbott’s (1988) system of professions approach and focuses on changes in professional work. It is assumed that all professions have strong or weak control of jurisdictions, which are described as a profession’s exclusive rights to a task area, including the right to define tasks and relevant professional knowledge. The assumption is that jurisdictions change and are under constant negotiation at the workplace until settled. The settlements range from strong to weak control of jurisdiction. The analytical frame also identifies disturbances in negotiating jurisdiction that can be internal or external to a profession, e.g., new knowledge, organization, and technology.

The results show that developing library services for researchers is an ambiguous and complicated task. It is influenced by several constraints and addressed differently by academic librarians. Constraints are related to the task description, organization, management support, communication, academic librarians’ skills and competencies, as well as level of ambition. The results showed that academic librarians can claim jurisdiction within research, although disciplinary differences emerged. Academic librarians at a science and medical library seemed to have more apparent opportunities than academic librarians in humanities and art history or social science libraries to claim jurisdiction within research. The study confirms that access jurisdiction is an acknowledged jurisdiction for academic librarians and is strengthened by new and emerging tasks related to access, e.g., digitization. Access jurisdiction seems to act as a springboard to claim and negotiate jurisdiction within research. The study reveals active push and passive pull dynamics related to negotiating jurisdictions and highlighted communication and information dissemination as an organizational disturbance not previously considered in Abbott's (1988) system of professions approach. In addition, the thesis clarified a need to analyze the work and needs of the profession itself.

Abstract [en]

The use of bibliometric indicators on individual and national levels has gathered considerable interest in recent years, but the application of bibliometric models for allocating resources at the institutional level has so far gathered less attention. This article studies the implementation of bibliometric measures for allocating resources at Swedish universities. Several models and indicators based on publications, citations, and research grants are identified. The design of performance-based resource allocation across major universities is then analysed using a framework from the field of evaluation studies. The practical implementation, the incentives as well as the ‘ethics’ of models and indicators, are scrutinized in order to provide a theoretically informed assessment of evaluation systems. It is evident that the requirements, goals, possible consequences, and the costs of evaluation are scarcely discussed before these systems are implemented. We find that allocation models are implemented in response to a general trend of assessment across all types of activities and organizations, but the actual design of evaluation systems is dependent on size, orientation, and the overall organization of the institution in question.

Note

Sustainable development is an interdisciplinary subject that has developed dramatically over the last few decades. Bibliometrics offers quantitative analytical techniques with which to study the development and growth of research in this area. The information used for the present study was retrieved from the SCI-EXPANDED, SSCI, and A&HCI (Thomson Reuters) databases. The search was made on the topic "Sustainable development", limited to Document Types (Article) and Time Span (1900-2013). The result was a total of 13 093 articles retrieved. During the last 10 years, the annual (exponential) growth rate has been 12%, corresponding to a 6-year doubling time. The productivity of the authors varied widely. The 23 290 occurrences of the articles were distributed among 218 Web of Science categories. "Environmental Sciences" was the top-ranked category, with 3427 occurrences (by itself accounting for more than 26% of the total, and presenting the greatest diversity), followed by "Environmental Studies" (2417), "Ecology" (1046), and "Economics" (933). The methodological approach taken in the present work could be used to describe the structure of any other scientific field and its relationships with other disciplines, and to visualize the relationship between the different WoS categories conforming the subject under study.

Abstract [sv]
